Difficult Childhood

Merriam-Webster defines Trauma as: “A very difficult or unpleasant experience that causes someone to have mental or emotional problems usually for a long time.”

Trauma can stem from abuse, neglect or other painful experiences. Its implications for treatment are a widely researched topic.

An addiction wake-up call

Two years ago, I died.

At 9 p.m. on March 15, 2015, my years-long drug addiction caught up with me. My body overdosed.  With my 5-year-old son watching in confusion, my wife performed CPR on me as I lay on our bedroom floor. I laid in the hospital unconscious with a blood oxygen level of 12 for many hours. After many shots of Narcan and prayers, I woke up and my world had changed forever.

The U.S. has seen a steep increase in the problem of substance abuse and alcoholism not only by civilians but by veterans and active duty military as well.

The Department of Defense has a strict zero-tolerance policy for drug use. But the trauma experienced during combat or prolonged deployments, as well as military sexual abuse and work-related injuries, has contributed to the rise in overuse of prescription medicine and illegal drugs.

Veterans and active duty members also struggle with high rates of tobacco addiction and alcoholism.

Ask anyone who has worn the uniform of a First Responder --control, safety, stability, and containment are all priorities when we arrive on the scene. If these conditions don’t exist, we will create them. It’s what we do. We will raise an oasis in the midst of the desert. We will cause the eye of the storm. We will bring peace and order into a chaotic environment. Again, it’s what we do. And we are darn good at it.

Alcohol Poisoning

Your liver can process one serving of alcohol per hour. That means if you’re drinking, your liver can only handle within one hour the equivalent of 12 ounces of beer or 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of distilled alcohol, like whiskey, tequila, gin, rum, or vodka.

Binge drinking isn’t only associated with college students any longer. The CDC found that middle-aged adults are most often the ones suffering from alcohol poisoning.

You’re binge drinking if you’re a woman and have four or more drinks in a two-hour period or five more drinks for men in the same time period.
